Year 1: MEMORY & IDENTITY

Concept: An art object can house a part of your self.

Cultural Reference: Jennifer Walsh’s sound reliquaries; traditional reliquaries

Student creates a reliquary for a personally significant memory.

Year 2: AUTO- BIOGRAPHY

Concept: Your artwork can tell your story.

Cultural Reference: Auto-biographical and confessional comic/collage books by Lynda Barry, What It Is and Picture This.

Students use elementary bookbinding to make a simple book, which they illustrate with an autobiographical story in pen and ink and (optional) collage elements.

Year 3: MEMORY AS A SPACE

Concept: You can create a portrait without a figure.

Cultural Reference: Annie Liebovitz's Pilgrimmage series, Van Gogh's Bedroom at Arles, Susan Rothenberg's Green Studio.

Students review, then use or flout different systems of perspective to create a "self portrait" through depiction pf a space where they locate a significant event/memory from their life.
